STEP UP: What Works in Education?

The 2023 STEP UP “What Works in Education?” Conference aimed to highlight innovative research addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing education systems in Australia and around the world.
The program explored the influence of role models, gender and socio-economic disadvantage on educational achievement and career outcomes, the role of engagement and enjoyment in learning, school choice and student wellbeing, and how competition shaped STEM participation. The conference concluded with a keynote by Dr Jacqui Dwyer (Reserve Bank of Australia) on the state of economics education in Australia and its implications for developing future economic capability.
Keynote
Dr. Jacqui Dwyer is senior economist with the Reserve Bank of Australia. She has worked in various roles at the Bank involving economic research, economic analysis, monetary policy advice and central bank communication. Dr. Dwyer established the Bank’s business liaison program, as well as its public education program. The public education program provides a comprehensive selection of engaging resources, events and learning experiences supporting Economics teachers and students, as well as being of interest to wider audiences.
She is also the Head of the Information Department and Chair of the Bank’s Educators Advisory Panel. Established in 2017, the role of the Panel is to provide expert guidance to the Bank on matters of education so as to inform the Bank's educational initiatives. Dr. Dwyer has also worked as an economist at the Bank of England, the Queensland Treasury and the former Bureau of Agricultural Economics.

Contribute to our research
Contribute to an interdisciplinary research agenda combining theory, empirical analysis and randomised controlled trials. We invite researchers to reach out and work with our network across UNSW and the wider community to design, test and share new approaches to education.
