Course summary

Design and develop best practice cycleways that encourage more people to ride

This program will outline the processes involved in the development of cycleways, from conception to detailed design. By exploring relevant legislation and guidelines, design principles and best practice, participants will gain the skills and knowledge to design a separated cycleway that considers and caters to the needs of the end-user and wider community.

Site visits and group activities will help bring concepts to life, as participants work together to develop a cycleway design from a brief. Participants will be guided to consider site constraints, inclusivity, feasibility and community impacts in the initial stages of design and then dig deeper to create specific elements like intersections, traffic signals and integration with existing streetscapes.

Who will benefit

  • Professionals involved in transport or urban infrastructure planning
  • Engineers, planners and designers seeking to integrate active transport solutions
  • Government and consultancy staff developing sustainable mobility projects

Course is suitable for

  • Professionals in transport planning, civil engineering or urban design seeking to enhance skills in active transport and cycleway infrastructure.

About the course

Designing for active urban mobility

This course explores the principles of cycleway planning and design within the broader context of active transport. Participants will learn how to create safe, accessible and connected cycling infrastructure that supports sustainable mobility, encourages behavioural change and enhances liveability in urban environments.

The need for this course was discussed with NSW Minister for Active Transport Rob Stokes and City of Sydney Manager of Cycling Strategy, Fiona Campbell at the Thought Leaders Series: The Future of active transport in NSW event.

Why enrol in this course

Apply design theory in real-world contexts

Take part in immersive design activities, site visits and group projects that bring the cycleway design process to life — from initial concept to detailed delivery.

Collaborate in a supportive learning environment

Work with peers from government, engineering and planning sectors to share ideas, exchange expertise and solve real-world design challenges together.

Blended learning grounded in best practice

Combine online and in-person learning while applying Austroads and Transport for NSW design standards to create safe, inclusive and future-ready active transport infrastructure.

Connect with industry experts

Learn from leading professionals with decades of experience in sustainable mobility and urban design, gaining practical insights you can apply directly to your work.

"The content added value to my work as I'm typically on the other side of the design process working at TfNSW in the Active Transport division, assessing proposals, strategies, and project applications seeking funding - so seeing how these designs come to be from start to end was very eye-opening in all the good ways, as I have a better understanding of the amount of work that goes into a design, and what needs to be considered/accounted for prior to presenting it to TfNSW in hopes of funding for example."
