Course summary

Diagnose and manage childhood vision disorders

This course emphasises the importance of the comprehensive childhood vision examination, the management of childhood refractive error, evaluation and management of common childhood strabismus and diagnosis and treatment of amblyopia.

Throughout the progression of this course, you will reflect on broader clinician capabilities, including the ability to translate research evidence practice and apply communication skills required for paediatric clinical practice with patient-centred care in mind.

Amanda is a paediatric optometrist and education focused academic at UNSW where she is involved in the clinical teaching of paediatric optometry, binocular vision and myopia control to pre-registration optometrists and vision science students. Amanda has special interests in evidence-based clinical teaching and practice, and co-convenes the paediatric strand of the final year Master of Clinical Optometry course.

It provides practical, evidence-based training in the diagnosis and management of common childhood vision disorders, including refractive error, strabismus and amblyopia. By the end of this course, you'll be equipped with the skills to assess and interpret visual function, ocular alignment, refractive status and overall eye health in infants and pre-literate children. You'll gain a deeper understanding of typical ocular and visual neurodevelopment in healthy children, and learn to diagnose common paediatric eye conditions.
