Course summary

Systems engineering made easy

This course applies the latest International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) and International Test and Evaluation Association approaches to provide a comprehensive understanding of systems engineering. Participants will explore requirements engineering and management, alongside the tools and processes that support conceptual and preliminary system design, including stakeholder identification, system scoping, configuration management and interface control.

The course also examines the role of Test and Evaluation (T&E) within verification and validation, as well as the management of systems engineering processes across the system lifecycle. It also introduces variations on standard methodologies, including Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and Agile SE, equipping participants with practical knowledge for modern systems development.

Who will benefit

  • Professionals who are involved in the planning, execution and delivery of projects which involve multiple stakeholders, numerous objectives and many components and who are familiar with the core concepts of SE. Examples of such projects include designing a new aircraft, developing an Enterprise Resource Planning software package, planning a large infrastructure project, developing a new learning package for an organisation or developing a new product which will be integrated into a wider system.
  • Due to the nature of systems, this course is applicable to a wide variety of industries including Logistics, Manufacturing, Information Technology, Security, Defence and more.

Course is suitable for

  • The course is designed for beginners and assumes no prior knowledge.

Learning outcomes

Engineer systems like a pro

By completing this course, you will gain practical skills and knowledge in systems engineering, including requirements engineering, conceptual and preliminary design processes, configuration management, interface control and Test & Evaluation (T&E) practices. You will understand overarching systems engineering processes across the system lifecycle and be familiar with variations such as Model-Based SE and Agile SE.

What you'll learn

Upon completion of this course, you will be equipped to effectively manage systems engineering activities throughout the lifecycle of complex systems. You’ll have the ability to apply practical tools and methodologies to conceptualise, design and evaluate systems, lead or contribute to design and T&E processes and integrate modern approaches like MBSE and Agile SE into real-world projects.

Topics covered

The course applies the latest International Council on Systems EngineeringSE Body of Knowledge and International Test and Evaluation Association approaches and practices to describe the functions, roles, design and use of systems, including:

  • Requirements engineering and management for realising capable systems, including the various tools that can be used to elicit requirements
  • The processes undertaken as part of conceptual design activities including stakeholder identification, system scoping, requirements definition etc. and the methods and tools used to carry out these processes
  • The processes undertaken as part of preliminary design activities including configuration item identification, requirement allocation, interface management etc. and the methods and tools used to carry out these processes
  • The use of Test and Evaluation (T&E) as part of a wider V&V program including the identification, costs and benefits, and management of T&E
  • The overarching management of SE processes throughout the system lifecycle
  • Variations on the standard SE methodologies including Model Based SE and Agile SE
