A commitment to make a difference

"A law school should have and communicate to its students a keen concern for those on whom the law bears harshly."

These are the words of UNSW Law & Justice's founding Dean, Emeritus Professor John Halden Wootten AC QC, and have guided our first 50 years to become one of Australia's leaders in legal education, ranked #1 in Australia for law (QS World University Rankings by Subject, 2025).

This commitment continues through our students, educators and researchers who contribute to advocacy and law reform for issues such as gender-based violence, Indigenous rights and equal access to justice.

Since 1981, our on-campus Kingsford Legal Centre (KLC) has provided pro bono and subsidised legal support services to thousands of people in the local community who would otherwise lack legal advice. It's provided clinical legal education for generations of law students, showing how the law operates in reality and how it should serve disadvantaged communities.
