UNSW introduces the flex-semester academic calendar

With extensive input from the UNSW community, the University has decided to adopt an academic calendar to meet the changing needs of students, staff, and the broader education landscape.
The flex-semester calendar will replace the current 3+ calendar in 2028.
The key features include:
- two core semesters, with 12 weeks of teaching, plus a 1-week mid-semester break.
- optional six-week summer and winter terms for intensive or catch-up courses and accelerated study.
- embedded six-week teaching periods within the two core semesters, offering greater flexibility in course design and delivery.
UNSW Online will continue to operate an independent six-term (hexamester) calendar for our Lifelong Learning offering.

The flex-semester model enables a richer student experience, stronger alignment with workforce and industry needs, and more sustainable operations.

Over 7,000 students and staff contributed to a comprehensive consultation and evaluation process.
Several calendar options were assessed against factors including:- Learning outcomes
- Student and staff experience
- Financial sustainability
- Operational feasibility
After detailed analysis, the flex-semester model was recommended by University Leadership Team and endorsed by UNSW Council for 2028 launch.

UNSW is transitioning to a new academic calendar in 2028. UNSW recently updated the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) registered duration of some degrees to reflect the maximum duration that may apply during the academic calendar transition period. This ensures the registered duration accommodates students commencing at different intake points during the academic calendar transition, where the timing of commencement may result in a longer overall study duration.
CRICOS displays the current registered duration for a degree and does not distinguish between historical, current and future student cohorts. As a result, graduates may notice that the duration currently displayed is different from the duration that applied when they studied.
If you completed your degree before the academic calendar transition in 2028, the updated CRICOS duration does not change the duration, study arrangements, academic requirements or qualification that applied to your cohort.
The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for assessing visa applications and determining individual eligibility.
If you require supporting documentation for a Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa application or another purpose, UNSW can provide a letter confirming the degree duration and study arrangements that applied to your cohort, please request official statements here.
