Supporting research with new helium infrastructure
Cryogens, helium plant and Physics Lawn loading zone upgrade
UNSW continues to invest in specialist research infrastructure that enables leading scientific discovery while improving the safety, resilience and performance of campus operations.
As part of this commitment, UNSW Estate Management delivered a purpose-built helium recovery facility and upgraded loading zone at the Newton Building (J12) to support the School of Physics' growing research requirements.
The project included a new enclosed loading dock, dangerous goods store, chiller and supporting mechanical, electrical and hydraulic services to improve the handling, storage and recovery of helium.
To ensure research activities continued uninterrupted, the project team installed a temporary helium recovery system throughout construction, maintaining continuous gas supply to critical teaching and research facilities.
