Mark your calendars: the first ever Big STEM Assembly is landing this July!

In partnership with the Australian Antarctic Program and the Australian Space Agency, Future You is proud to present the inaugural BIG STEM Assembly, taking place on Thursday 23 July, 1:30-2pm AEST.
Designed for learners in Years 3-7, this free virtual event brings STEM careers to life in classrooms and homes across Australia. Students will hear directly from diverse role models working in STEM - discovering how science, technology, engineering and maths skills are powering discoveries in new worlds, from the Antarctic to space and the digital frontier.
Aligned to the ‘Science as a Human Endeavour’ strand of the federal curriculum, the assembly highlights how STEM is a human activity that is strengthened by diverse people, perspectives and experiences.
Speaking about the importance of this partnership, Professor Lisa Williams, Executive Director of Future You, said:
“We know that children begin forming ideas about who belongs in STEM at a very early age. Exposure to diverse, relatable role models can play a role in challenging stereotypes, increasing engagement and showing children that STEM is truly for everyone. The BIG STEM Assembly helps children see the many different pathways into STEM, while connecting classroom learning to real-world careers and discoveries. We’re thrilled to be partnering with the Australian Antarctic Program and the Australian Space Agency to bring these stories to learners across Australia.“
One of the role models that learners will meet during the event is Dr Elyse Allender, Director of Space Science and Technology at the Australian Space Agency. Looking ahead to the event, Elyse said:
“The Big STEM Assembly will be a powerful moment for young people to lean into their curiosity and see where STEM can take them. The Australian Space Agency is proud to support this national event, encouraging young people to explore career pathways, learn from those working in the field, and better understand the opportunities available to them.”
Speaking of their excitement about being involved, Dr Annalise Rees, Assistant Director – Antarctic Arts and Education Engagement, added:
“The Australian Antarctic Program is proud to be supporting Future You. Inspiring and shaping the next generation of Antarctic expeditioners, scientists and leaders is key to protecting Antarctica for future generations.”
