Future You has launched a new suite of free classroom resources that strengthen writing outcomes by embedding literacy in meaningful STEM contexts.
The new lesson suite, designed specifically for Year 3 learners, is the first in a series of literacy resources that combine structured writing instruction with real-world STEM contexts, giving educators practical, curriculum-aligned tools that support writing development while also challenging STEM stereotypes. In this particular suite of resources, students meet Louise, a heavy vehicle mechanic, helping broaden perceptions of who belongs in STEM.
Developed by an expert team at UNSW Sydney, the resources respond to growing national concern about declining writing performance across Australia. The lesson suite aligns with the Australian Curriculum v9.0, supporting foundational writing skills through explicit instruction, scaffolded activities, vocabulary development, and collaborative learning.
By providing oral rehearsal opportunities, extension opportunities, peer learning structures, and step-by-step scaffolding, the lessons are designed to make writing purposeful, engaging, and accessible for all learners.
The fully resourced lessons make implementation in the classroom quick and easy, including clear teacher guidance, ready-to-use materials, and assessment opportunities. Professional learning opportunities will be offered later in 2026, when the full suite of resources, covering learners from Years 3-6, have been developed.
These resources form part of our broader mission to challenge stereotypes about who belongs in STEM by exposing students to real-world STEM role models. We hope that you enjoy exploring them and putting them to work in your classrooms or homes!
