Your support will help inspire tomorrow's changemakers
UNSW Sydney’s student equity targets are designed to build and maintain a student community that reflects the broader Australian community. A large part of supporting these targets is Equity Scholarships.
Due to rising costs of living, moving costs and rental obligations, Equity Scholarships play a critical role in ensuring students underrepresented in higher education can not only access university and succeed but fully participate in university life by supplementing these necessities. A donation, large or small, will contribute to a more equitable, progressive future for all.
Katherine's story
My name is Katherine. I always knew I wanted to pursue higher education, but I wasn't sure how I would get there as the first in my family to attend university. UNSW Gateway provided an early offer pathway, and linked scholarships which made university possible.
My parents came to Australia as refugees, having escaped severe discrimination and persecution in post-war Vietnam. While they focused on making ends meet, I resolved that with enough hard work and dedication, I could change my circumstances and make my family proud by attending university.
I would not have been able to attend UNSW without the support of scholarships and donor-funded programs. Donations like yours go towards helping students like me achieve our dreams.
Studying at UNSW has shown me that my background offers a valuable and necessary perspective. I am now in my 4th year of study, and through work experience opportunities and career development workshops, I’m proud to currently be working as a paralegal at a commercial law firm.
Low SES scholarships
Young people from low socio-economic backgrounds are drastically under-represented at Australian universities. Those in the lowest brackets of disadvantage make up 25 per cent of the population, but only 16 per cent of all university undergraduates.
At UNSW, we want to ensure the best minds can achieve their academic potential, regardless of their background or circumstances.
Your support of our Equity Scholarship program will help us repair the imbalance. We will be tackling socio-economic disadvantage, but we will also be investing in our own diversity, creating spaces for new ideas to flourish, and new leaders to emerge.

President and Vice-Chancellor's Equity Scholarship
For students experiencing disadvantage, costs can be a barrier to pursuing and excelling in higher education. The President and Vice-Chancellor’s Equity Scholarship provides financial support for students:
- from rural or remote areas
- who are Indigenous Australians
- from low socio-economic backgrounds
- with disability
- experiencing other forms of hardship.
Your support of this scholarship can help to cover essentials like housing, food, textbooks, computers, and transport, so the recipient can focus on their studies and stay on track to graduate.

Basser College
For many students from disadvantaged backgrounds, starting university means setting up home far away from family and friends. Living on campus as part of a welcoming and supportive college community can make a big difference.
The Basser College Scholarship Fund provides support for students from Indigenous, rural and low socio-economic backgrounds to live at Basser College while they study.
By contributing to the scholarship, you will be giving a student a home away from home and helping them to make the most of their time at university.

Women in STEM Equity Scholarship
UNSW is actively working to enrol more women in the STEM subjects: science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Our Women in STEM Equity Scholarship is one way we're helping to drive change. The scholarship particularly targets young women with a background of educational disadvantage or financial hardship.

Zahra (BSc ’19), UNSW ASPIRE Ambassador
“Thank you for your support, the impact of which can last a lifetime.”
Meet Zahra, a student volunteer for ASPIRE - UNSW’s award-winning educational outreach program. Through ASPIRE, Zahra is able to help grow the academic ability and aspirations of students with little to no exposure to university, and help them to see higher education as a very real option for them.
“Knowing about university shouldn't be a privilege, and many students rarely leave their community so their life experience is very limited. ASPIRE opens up a world of possibilities for them,” she said. “Your support will ensure that we can continue encouraging young people to achieve their goals.”
Volunteering with ASPIRE has been extremely rewarding for Zahra. She wants donors to know the true impact of their generosity, having seen firsthand how many young minds have flourished with its impact, transforming personal and professional trajectories, and breaking cycles of disadvantage.
“I want to say thank you, so much, for supporting the program that has helped so many, and for the opportunity to share my story. It truly means a lot,” she said. “A donation towards ASPIRE is a long-term investment in Australia's future, so the impact of your support can last a lifetime.”
