Public Lecture, Monday 29th November, 2010, presented by the Faculty of Science UNSW and the MASCOS: Centre of Excellence for Mathematics and Statistics of Complex Systems with James Sethian, Professor of Mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley and Head of the Mathematics Berkeley National Laboratory.

Professor James Sethian, is Professor of Mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley and Head of the Mathematics Department of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and a Member of the US National Academy of Engineering.

He is the recipient of numerous prizes and awards, including the Norbert Wiener Prize in Applied Mathematics, awarded only every three years jointly by the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, (SIAM). He is also the winner of the 2011 Pioneer Prize, awarded every four years by the International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM), for "his fundamental methods and algorithms which have had a large impact in applications such as in imaging and shape recovery in medicine, geophysics and tomography and drop dynamics in inkjets."

Professor Sethian is visiting Australia as part of CTAC 2010, The 15th Computational Techniques and Applications Conference, in Sydney and is excited to present this lecture, ' In pursuit of interfaces: inkjet plotters, coating rollers, semiconductors, retinopathy, and chemical pathways'.

Professor Sethian is renowned as both creator and communicator of modern applications of mathematics. He is at the pinnacle of his profession.
