It gives us great pleasure to report that PhD student Stephen Maher has received a prestigious award in the area of Airline Operations Research.

On 12th October, Stephen was announced as the winner of the Anna Valicek Award at the Airline Group of the International Federation of Operational Research Societies (AGIFORS) symposium in Arizona. He was awarded for his research paper titled "The recoverable robust tail assignment problem", and was selected as a finalist in an international student paper competition.

The AGIFORS council believed that Stephen’s submission was innovative, and directly relevant to the needs of the AGIFORS community and the airline industry. The council said that winning the award represented "an excellent accomplishment and affirmation" of Stephen's scholarship.

The Anna Valicek Medal recognises original and innovative research in the application of operations research to airline and/or airline related business problems. This annual award is sponsored by AGIFORS, and honours the late Anna Valicek who served for many years as a member of the AGIFORS council.

Stephen is a current PhD student within the School of Mathematics and Statistics who works under the supervision of A/Prof Gary Froyland, and co-supervisor Cheng-Lung (Richard) Wu from the UNSW School of Aviation.

Congratulations to Stephen for this exceptional achievement!
