The 2016 A&D Annual design competition has attracted a high quality field of more than 30 entries by a wide range of UNSW Art & Design students.
The winning concept was selected by a panel including Arc, communications, UNSW Galleries staff and Dean Prof Ross Harley.
The final design concept is by Media Arts student Samuel Jaramillo. The panel was impressed with Samuel's dynamic design, and commented on the sense of place and celebration that the logo communicates, as well as the considered and thoughtful concept statement that accompanied the design.
Samuel’s concept has been recognised with a $1,000 award and he is producing work to be applied across the exhibition, website, social media and promotions for this years major event.
Two other concepts were commended as runners up in the competition by Estee Sarsfield and Faraz Ahmed. Both designs were also considered outstanding by the panel and each creative will receive a $100 gift voucher.
Samuel Jaramillo is an illustrator and graphic artist currently completing his honours degree in Media Arts at UNSW Art & Design. He is originally from Colombia, a place which has been the foundation for his creativity, and has had a strong impact on passion for media and design and his creative career aspirations. Interested in the power images have to communicate and stimulate emotions and opinions, Samuel's practice explores the way different audiences and mediums interact, and he enjoys multidisciplinary projects as good opportunities to explore new forms of design.
Samuel is keen to move into the creative industries once he has completed his degree, and is committed to communication and innovative design that is effective anywhere in the world.
From Samuel's concept statement:
"For the past four years I have attended UNSW Art & Design, I have seen and participated in the transformation process the University has gone through to develop and evolve into a research/contemporary art making institution. I want my logo to represent this construction process by appropriating the campus space into a facility that welcomes people to be part of the Annual, one of the most exciting events held during the year.
My logo uses the letter “A” as a building facility and illustrates it with elements from the campus where all the creative people that attend start their professional development process, and finalise this learning stage with the celebration of the Annual event. The 'A' becomes a representation of the annual and of the campus, and links the two of them... More importantly I want the logo to be an invitation to participate and celebrate creativity, therefore the 'A' as a building creates a visual relationship between the event and the institution."
