Zdravko Botev receives 2018 Christopher Heyde Medal

Dr Zdravko Botev received the 2018 Christopher Heyde Medal at the Australian Academy of Science's annual Science at the Shine Dome event last month.
Dr Botev was awarded the medal at a ceremony on 24 May which recognised several exceptional researchers for outstanding achievements in early- and mid-career research, or across a lifetime of work.
In awarding Dr Botev the 2018 Christopher Heyde Medal, the Australian Academy of Science cited his development of innovative methodologies that aim to understand the probability structures underlying the occurrence of high-cost, hard-to-predict events. The novel rare-event simulation algorithms Dr Botev has derived have not only advanced the fields of computational statistics and applied probability, but have been applied in multiple domains, including communication and computer network design,
digital watermarking, safety assessment of debris collision in space and chemical geology.
The Christopher Heyde Medal honours the contributions to mathematics by the late Professor Christopher Charles Heyde. Professor Heyde was the Foundation Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences at the Australian National University, and Professor Emeritus of Statistics at Columbia University, New York.
