A new scholarship fund has been established to enable Indigenous students to study post-graduate coursework at AGSM @ UNSW Business.

The Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM) Indigenous Leadership Scholarship will contribute to the growth and development of emerging Indigenous leaders and equip them to play a bigger role in national and international industry.

The Scholarship can be used to complete an AGSM Master of Management, a Full-Time MBA, Executive MBA (EMBA), or Online MBA (MBAX) and will be awarded based on academic merit and leadership qualities demonstrated upon application. Scholarship funds of up to $40,000 will be awarded to each successful candidate and can be used towards tuition fees, as a stipend or other costs related to study. The first scholarship is to be awarded to an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander new or continuing student in Term 1 of 2020.

“AGSM is committed to seeing Indigenous Australians thrive in the community and in business,” said Professor Nick Wailes, Director AGSM and Deputy Dean UNSW Business School. “Our programs are designed to equip a new generation of leaders to succeed in an accelerating world. The new generation of business leaders in this country must include Indigenous leaders who have enormous potential to contribute to building an innovative nation,” he said.

“This scholarship will support Indigenous business leaders and those in middle management to advance to more senior positions,” he said. “Scholarship recipients will also take part in a tailored mentoring program to encourage meaningful connections and expand their professional and personal networks throughout their degree. AGSM will further enhance the learning experience by providing students the opportunity to participate in international study exchanges” Wailes said.

The scholarship fund is seeking contributions from a variety of sources including our AGSM alumni community. “I’m delighted with the generous financial support we have already received for this program from some alumni and supporters already. It’s a great opportunity to make a positive contribution to reconciliation” says Wailes

Along with its existing Indigenous Capability Development Programs, AGSM recently appointed four new Indigenous leaders to its faculty and is designing a new program for the Australian Public Service to increase their number of senior Indigenous leaders.
