We are thrilled to report that two former PhD students have won Dean’s Awards for Outstanding PhD Theses.

Congratulations to Edward McDonald and Tom Stindl, who each submitted their thesis in 2019.

Dr McDonald's thesis, completed under the supervision of Professor Fedor Sukochev, is titled Double Operator Integration with applications to Quantised Calculus.

Dr Stindl's thesis, completed under Dr Feng Chen's supervision, is titled Statistical inference for renewal Hawkes self-exciting point processes.

The Dean’s Award for Outstanding PhD Theses recognises high quality PhD theses produced at UNSW. The award goes to PhD graduates who have submitted a thesis that requires only minimal corrections, received outstanding levels of achievement for all examination criteria, and is in the top 10% of PhD theses examined.

This isn't the first time that Dr McDonald and Dr Stindl have been recognised for excellence: both won awards for an Outstanding Talk at our annual Postgraduate Conference. Dr Stindl won in 2017 (Statistics) while Dr McDonald won in 2018 (Pure Maths).

Both are now currently working in the School of Mathematics and Statistics. Dr Stindl took up a lectureship in 2019 and Dr McDonald recently took up a postdoctoral research assistant position.

A very big congratulations to Ed and Tom for their fantastic achievements!
