The Sutherland Shire Environment Centre invites nominations for a $1000 prize to be awarded for a research thesis at the Masters or PhD level, with a focus on the environment of the Sutherland Shire and/or its bioregions.    Topics might include (but are not limited to) environmental conservation, environmental remediation, environmental education and environmental history.  Ideally the winning thesis, or an edited version or extract would be published in the public domain, although this would not be a requirement.  Theses will be nominated through their authors’ supervisors.

The Sutherland Shire Environment Centre is an independent non-profit, non-government organisation.  The Centre was originally established in 1991 by a local historian, publisher and environmental activist Bob Walshe. The Prize-winning work will be consistent with the objectives of the Environment Centre -

  1. To act to defend the environment of the Sutherland Shire and associated bio-regions, supporting members, local communities and community organisations in their efforts to protect and improve their local areas.
  2. To develop and conduct environmental education initiatives, encouraging change toward environmental sustainability in the Sutherland Shire and its bio-regions.
