Thomas Scheckter wins Dean’s Award for Outstanding PhD Theses

We are proud to announce that Thomas Scheckter has won a UNSW Dean’s Award for Outstanding PhD Theses.

Dr Scheckter completed his thesis, Martingale convergence techniques in noncommutative integration, under the supervision of Fedor Sukochev in 2020. 

Since then, he has been working in the School of Mathematics and Statistics as a Research Associate alongside Professor Sukochev, Dr Dmitriy Zanin, and Dr Ed McDonald, studying Functional Analysis and Operator Theory.

The Dean’s Award for Outstanding PhD Theses recognises high-quality PhD theses produced at UNSW, which receive outstanding levels of achievement for all examination criteria, and in the opinion of both examiners is in the top 10% of theses they have examined. Examiners, who are external to the University, are leaders in their fields.

Professor Sukochev believes Dr Scheckter's award was richly deserved.

"Thomas Scheckter is one of most diligent students I have encountered in my supervision practice", said Prof Sukochev. "He always looks at a 'wider picture', trying to imbibe as much information concerning the problem at hand as possible and apply his results to the widest possible circumstances.

"This approach has another byproduct: Thomas is very widely read and holds an informed opinion on a variety of subjects in Mathematics and Physics, which is quite unusual for a newly-baked PhD. It is a pleasure to discuss with him deep philosophical ideas which drove the development of Quantum Theory and allied areas of Mathematics". 

Dr Scheckter has just commenced a new position as a Research Fellow at the University of New Mexico. His work there with Associate Professor Anna Skripka will focus on Stochastic Analysis and Double Operator Integrals.
