Graduation 2021: LCDR Mohd Fazli Bin Jamsuri

It’s been a busy couple of years for Lieutenant Commander Mohd Fazli Bin Jamsuri, as he balanced work, study and family commitments while living in a new country.

His efforts have paid off – he is now a graduate of UNSW Canberra with a Master of Strategy and Security.

The Royal Malaysian Naval Officer completed his masters while he was seconded to the ADF Peace Operations Training Centre in Canberra.

His two-year secondment gave him the opportunity to fly his wife, Rufaedah, and kids Dhiya and Raqib over to join him, where they have experienced Australia for the first time.

“This motivated me to remain focused while dividing my time between work, family and study,” Fazli said.

“It was definitely a daunting task, but will remain a memorable time in my life.”

Fazli was able to balance his online studies together with his core business as an instructor at POTC.

“As studying was not my primary job here coming to Australia, the self-paced learning environment suit me perfectly,” he said.

“The virtual sessions that brought participants from across the globe together provided a learning environment outside the traditional classroom setting.”   

Many of the units Fazli studied hit home with his personal experience.

“As a Naval Officer in the Royal Malaysian Navy, and having been involved in many maritime dispute operations, the Asia-Pacific Security module, as well as other related units signified the importance of stability within the region, particularly from the perspective of Australia’s strategic defence,” he said.

“I am truly grateful for the support of many professors and the program manager who provided endless advice, especially for those of us studying part-time, and with non-English speaking backgrounds.”

Fazli said experiences provided by the teaching staff at UNSW Canberra enhanced his interpersonal skills and furthered his career development, especially in the area of decision-making at the strategic security level. 

As an instructor himself, he has picked up some tips and tricks from the teaching style used by lecturers at UNSW Canberra, which he plans to implement in classes he teaches here in Australia, as well as in his home country.
