Katie Mack has almost 500 runs to her name in this season’s WBBL and has been key to the Adelaide Strikers’ title tilt, but what is not widely known is that the 28-year-old is a former Bumblebee.
Whilst playing with the ACT Meteors some six seasons ago, where she still plays, Katie reached out to UNSW Cricket Club to get some experience in Men’s Premier Cricket and now is the WBBL’s second leading run-scorer this season behind Australian super star Beth Mooney (528).
Mack has 476 runs at an average of 68, 301 of which have come in her last five innings, dismissed just once in that sequence.
In three seasons, Mack played 24 matches for UNSW across Third, Fourth and Fifth Grade, as well as Metropolitan Cup, the majority in fifth but all between September 2015 and March 2018.
At the time, Mack made a particular impression as an “incredibly good fielder” according to past president and honorary vice president, Matt Sanders.
“We were more than happy to accommodate her on the basis that she was going to be selected on merit (and) she just came down and became part of the club,” Sanders said.
“She’s an outstanding young woman, very good around the club.”
Mack made her fifth half-century this season for the Strikers in Wednesday night's win over the Brisbane Heat to steer her side into Thursday’s Challenger Final against Melbourne Renegades which will decide who plays Perth Scorchers in the WBBL|07 Final on Saturday.
This is Mack’s third season as a Striker after moving from the Melbourne Stars in 2019. In four seasons wearing green the right-hander scored 846 runs.
Since moving to the South Australian capital, Mack has scored 783, including 476 this season.
