More than 40 UNSW Canberra alumni have been recognised in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Two graduates were appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) – Major General David Peter Coghlan and Lieutenant General Gavin John Reynolds. The award recognises distinguished service of a high degree to Australia or to humanity at large.
MAJGEN Coghlan, who has previously been named as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM), was recognised for distinguished service in the field of Defence capability acquisition and sustainment as Head of Land Systems Division and Head Armoured Vehicle Division.
LTGEN Reynolds, who has also previously been named as a Member of the Order of Australia, was recognised for distinguished service as the Military Representative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and European Union, Head Military Strategic Planning and Chief of Defence Intelligence.
Eight UNSW Canberra graduates were named a Member of the Order of Australia, including Rear Admiral Wendy Anne Malcolm.
RADM Malcolm, who has previously been awarded the Conspicuous Service Medal (CSM), was recognised for exceptional service in surface ship sustainment for the Australian Defence Force.
UNSW Canberra Dean and Rector Professor Emma Sparks congratulated all recipients of a Queen’s Birthday Honour.
“We are proud to see so many members of the UNSW Canberra community acknowledged in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours, and we thank them for their contributions to Australia,” Professor Sparks said.
The UNSW Canberra recipients were among 70 alumni from across UNSW to receive a Queen’s Birthday Honour.
All UNSW Canberra honourees are currently serving, or have served, in the Australian Defence Force. The University also congratulates Vice Chief of the Australian Defence Force and UNSW Science alumnus, Vice Admiral David Lance Johnston, who was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia.
Governor-General David Hurley congratulated all Australians recognised on the Honours list.
“Recipients share some common traits – including selflessness, excellence and a commitment to service,” General Hurley said.
“They’re from different backgrounds, their stories are each unique, and each has served in different ways. This diversity is a strength and each has impacted their community and made it better.”
