It is with great pleasure that Head of School, PSM and Scientia Professor Nasser Khalili recently announced the promotion of CIES academics Dr Ulrike Dackermann and Dr Da (Daniel) Chen to Senior Lecturer.

“This is a fantastic outcome for the School” he said, “and a well-deserved recognition of their contributions to research, teaching, and service to the School, the Faculty, and the profession.”

About

Dr Da (Daniel) Chen is an ARC DECRA fellow, who joined the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering, UNSW in May 2023. Daniel is best known for his contributions to the development of functionally graded (FG) porous structures, where the constitutive model he proposed is one of the most adopted ways to assess such structural forms.

He leads several research projects, with funding of almost $2 million, including ARC DECRA (Smart Optimisation of Functionally Graded Porous Structures), ARC Linkage (Developing sustainable graded porous cementitious structures), Australian Composites Manufacturing (ACM) CRC-P, and UNSW-SJTU Collaborative Grant, etc.

Daniel is ranked among the top 2% scientists (single-year ranking, Stanford University, 2023 & 2024). He is also an Editorial Board Member of JCR Q1 journals (Engineering Structures, Structures).

Dr. Ulrike Dackermann joined UNSW in 2017 after serving as a lecturer at UTS from 2014. Her expertise includes Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), Non-Destructive Testing & Evaluation (NDT&E), Hybrid Timber Structures, Artificial Intelligence, Advanced Signal Processing, Timber Engineering, Modal Analysis, Guided Wave Analysis and Human-Induced Vibrations.

She is currently Deputy Editor of the Australian Journal of Civil Engineering.

A key research focus of Dr. Dackermann is the advancement of smart SHM systems through the integration of cutting-edge sensing technologies with AI, advanced signal processing, and data fusion techniques to enhance the safety, reliability, and sustainability of civil infrastructure.

Congratulations Ulrike and Daniel on their achievement! 👏
