The School of Mathematics and Statistics congratulates Professor David Warton who has received the 2025 Distinguished Achievement Award from the Statistics and the Environment Section of the American Statistical Association.

Professor Warton is an ecological statistician whose goal is to improve the ability of ecologists to answer important research questions utilising advanced data analysis.

Professor Warton leads the UNSW Ecological Statistics (Eco-Stats) Research Group, comprising experts in statistics research and postgraduate students. The group focuses on evaluating existing methodologies, exploring little-known modern methods, and developing entirely new statistical methodologies with a particular emphasis on model-based approaches.

Since its establishment in 2007, the Eco-Stats Group has received over $9M in ARC research funding and has published in more than100 in top international journals across statistics, ecology, and biology.

To further the interface between statistics and ecology, the Eco-Stats Group also conducts affiliated work with other specialised UNSW research centres, including the Evolution & Ecology Research Centre and the Centre for Ecosystem Science.

The 2025 Distinguished Achievement Award recognises Professor Warton’s long record of contributions to environmental statistics.

In response he says, “I'm very grateful to receive this award. I've been fortunate to work with plenty of bright people over the years on interesting problems and would like to thank my collaborators and share this award with them.”
