We asked William Nyguen, who is in his third year of a Bachelor of Education / Bachelor of Fine Arts, to answer 5 quick questions about his choice of degrees.
His advice for students who are considering a double degree?
“Do it. Honestly one of the best decisions I’ve made. Choose something that energises you not something that just sounds impressive.”
I’m the first in my family to finish high school, so education means a lot to me. I wanted to become the teacher I needed when I first came to Australia, someone who sees you and believes in you. The Fine Arts side lets me bring storytelling and creativity into that.
Teach Visual Arts, Film and Multimedia, or work in community programs that support students and belonging. Long-term, I want to design programs that help young people build identity and confidence through storytelling.
I’m never bored. When one area gets intense, the other gives me space to play, experiment and think differently. It keeps my brain alive.
I let them overlap. Education and art both deal with people, culture, identity and expression - so switching between them actually keeps me more flexible and creative.
One highlight has been building the UNSW International Students Association, leading it from an idea to a community of over 800 students. Another highlight is the friendships I’ve made at uni. Real, long-lasting friendships, the kind where I already know I’ll be getting a wedding invitation one day. 🙂
