In the last round of Civil Engineering graduations we saw three outstanding PhD graduates have successfully completed their doctoral journeys, each making a remarkable contributions to the transport scholarly domain:

  • Dr Sara Fazeli  thesis - strengthens disaster resilience by creating validated preparedness tools, guiding risk communication, and shaping policy to reduce fatalities, empower communities, and foster proactive behaviour for floods and bushfires Thesis Title: Measuring and Improving Individual Preparedness in Response to Flood and Bushfire Emergencies
  • Dr Zahra Nourmohammadi thesis developed machine learning and optimisation frameworks for last-mile delivery, integrating decision-maker, driver, and rider preferences. Her research introduced preference-learning models, graph-based clustering, and fatigue-aware e-cargo bike routing, enhancing logistics efficiency, equity, and sustainability in real-world urban delivery networks. Thesis Title: Preference Learning and Human-Centric Optimization for Last-Mile Delivery Routing
  • Dr Jason Wang    thesis shows better ways to assess large high value transport projects by modelling whole economies, including how people move, giving more accurate benefits and helping governments make better decisions.
Thesis Title: Computable General Equilibrium Models for Large Scale Transport Infrastructure Assessment

Their perseverance, curiosity, and commitment to research excellence exemplify the spirit of UNSW. We congratulate them on their success and look forward to seeing the impact of their work beyond the university.
