Real-World Data to Real-World Impact
Leveraging Australia’s national data assets

On 20 May 2026, the HSR EMCR Committee hosted a workshop on using national linked data for health research.
Speakers highlighted key national data platforms, including the National Health Data Hub (NHDH) and Person-level Integrated Data Asset (PLIDA), and how they support analysis of health outcomes and social determinants. Associate Professor Michael Falster presented an overview of both data assets. Case studies from Dr Malcolm Gillies and Dr Skye McGregor demonstrated how these data can inform policy, improve surveillance, and identify inequities.
Professor Louisa Jorm and Professor Claire Vajdic discussed ongoing challenges with data access and governance, as well as the need for stronger technical skills and collaboration.
A panel discussion reinforced the importance of working with policymakers and communities, and focusing on clear, meaningful research questions.
The workshop showcased UNSW’s strength in this area and emphasised the potential of linked data to drive real-world impact.
