Through a joint internship opportunity with Legal Aid NSW, students have the chance to see what it’s like to work as a lawyer in regional communities.
UNSW Law & Justice students can apply for a six three-week internship in Broken Hill, Dubbo and Wagga Wagga where they’ll get a taste of regional legal practice.
UNSW Law & Justice Dean Professor Andrew Lynch says the internship reflects the Faculty's commitment to preparing students for meaningful and impactful legal careers.
“We are so proud to partner with Legal Aid NSW to give our students a unique opportunity to develop practical legal skills while contributing to improved access to justice in regional communities,” he says.
“Students will gain invaluable firsthand experience working alongside dedicated practitioners, deepen their understanding of the legal needs of regional communities and explore the rewarding career opportunities available outside metropolitan centres.”
“Directly aligned with our strategic vision in Law & Justice 2030, this unique initiative with Legal Aid NSW both enriches student learning and supports the delivery of legal services where they are needed most.”
UNSW Law & Justice will provide each student with $4,000 to support living expenses for the duration of the placement. Students are responsible for organising their own travel and accommodation.
Legal Aid NSW Associate Director Steven Wright says the program is an outstanding opportunity for students.
“This is a rare opportunity for students to upskill and learn from Legal Aid NSW while enjoying the benefits of life in regional NSW and the diverse and complex casework in the regions,” he says.
“Students will gain practical experience across a broad range of legal matters, work closely with experienced solicitors and see firsthand the important role Legal Aid NSW plays in supporting local communities.”
“The internship also provides valuable insight into the unique challenges and rewards of regional legal practice, we hope it will encourage people to work in the regions.”

An in-person information session will be held with Legal Aid NSW and the Law & Justice WIL team on Thursday 24 September at 1pm in the UNSW Law Building.
