Deepen your knowledge and gain advanced research skills

The Honours program is your opportunity to generate new knowledge and understanding, and to design, develop, and complete a significant research project. It's an exciting opportunity to immerse yourself in an area of interest and to develop a wide range of skills that can be applied in both academic and professional contexts.

  • As an honours student in Indigenous Studies with Nura Gili, you’ll:

    • Join a cohort that’s recognised and valued for its contributions to research,
    • Develop your own research thesis,
    • Undertake independent research, and
    • Be supported and part of an Indigenous Studies academic community.
  • To be eligible, you must:

    • Have completed your UNSW undergraduate degree in Indigenous Studies or a relevant major, or an equivalent recognised qualification at another institution.
    • Have a WAM of 70 or higher (or equivalent) in Indigenous Studies or relevant stream.
    • Indigenous issues and the law.
    • Theories of decolonisation and settler colonialism.
    • Politics and ideology of race, gender and sexuality.
    • Cultural studies, popular culture, and studies of material culture.
    • Sovereignty, Self-Determination, Nationhood, Self-Government.
    • Aboriginal education, including the history of Aboriginal education.
    • Country-centred/place-based learning.
    • Indigenous research methodologies.
    • Learning and teaching in Indigenous higher education.
    • Indigenous histories, especially contemporary history and history of activism.
  • All-up the typical duration for this program is 1 year. You'll complete 48 UOC when taken as a standalone program:

    • 18 UOC: Coursework requirement for area of study 
    • 30 UOC: Research Project or Thesis
  • At UNSW fees are generally charged at course level and therefore dependent upon individual enrolment and other factors such as student's residency status.

Admission to Honours in Indigenous Studies is subject to resources and the approval of the Academic Lead, Nura Gili Centre for Indigenous Programs.

    The information you provide will help us understand your ambitions and determine if we're able to facilitate them.

  • Our Honours Convenor will review your details and get in touch to discuss your eligibility, research topic and honours program options.

  • If we accept your Expression of interest, we'll ask you to complete an online application via the apply online website.
