The Centre for Infrastructure Engineering and Safety (CIES) is a hub of research activity, whether it is working on our highly competitive ARC grant projects — Discovery and Linkage — or with industry colleagues on pressing industry matters. We are always launching new projects, and host visiting academics and events as well as strengthen our partnerships with government and industry.
Below are just some of the recent projects at CIES, demonstrating why we are considered the leading infrastructure research centre in Australia.

Our research

Geotechnical engineering

Research and expertise are centred around: unsaturated soil mechanics, including fundamentals and practical applications, dam and rock engineering, particularly related to scour and erosion, energy geotechnics, dynamics, liquefaction and earthquake engineering, for soils and tailings.

Innovative decarbonised infrastructure

Innovative Decarbonised Infrastructure (IDI) is an initiative which aims to research, develop, and commercialise innovative ideas, services and technologies to help industry reduce emissions related to our infrastructure and primary industries.

Structual engineering

We have a long history and reputation for large-scale experimentation, modelling, and development of new structural systems and guidelines that have been adopted in design codes

Engineering construction and management

The Engineering Construction and Management Group is internationally recognised for leading construction innovations. We undertake advanced research in automation, digitisation and sustainability in construction.
