This research project looks broadly at emerging creative technologies with a particular focus on liveness, as in live improvised music, DJing, VJing, dance, theatre and other performance contexts, and also creative coding — the use of code as a medium of creative expression. It asks how advanced realtime interfaces, information processing and forms of machine agency can transform live expression and the experience of live works. Potential projects include using AI in live music improvisation, creating new interfaces for expressive live video performance, and wearable technologies for dance and interactive experience. Technologies of particular interest include generative AI, realtime audio and video processing, IoT and expressive creative coding platforms. Applicants may have a performance or technical background, or bring social science or design research methods.
