Feedstocks for Green Metals and Manufacturing
Strategic Domestic Feedstocks for Green Metals and Manufacturing Resilience
Strategic Domestic Feedstocks for Green Metals and Manufacturing Resilience
Successful applicants will receive an annual stipend and a one-off Global Mobility Grant to conduct international engagement activities.
Australia’s transition to green metals requires reliable, lower-carbon industrial inputs as well as clean energy. This project will investigate how Australian secondary materials and industrial by-products can be transformed into strategic domestic feedstocks for metals and advanced manufacturing.
The research will identify priority material streams, develop processing pathways, and assess their composition, consistency, metallurgical function and performance under relevant manufacturing conditions. Advanced characterisation, thermodynamic analysis and microstructure–property evaluation will be used to determine whether these materials can meet industrial requirements for quality, safety and reliability.
Working with leading Japanese researchers in sustainable process metallurgy and high-temperature materials processing, the project will combine Australian industrial challenges with international expertise.
The outcomes will support reduced reliance on virgin or imported inputs, lower-emission production, improved resource productivity and stronger supply-chain resilience.
The project will also establish qualification criteria and scale-up pathways to help translate promising feedstocks from laboratory research into future industrial application.
