This project is part of the UNSW Scientia PhD Scholarship Scheme

Successful applicants will receive an annual stipend and a one-off Global Mobility Grant to conduct international engagement activities.

Land models represent the exchange of carbon, water and energy between the land and atmosphere in climate and weather models, but many complex processes remain difficult to represent well.

This PhD project will use machine learning and observations to improve CABLE, the land model used in Australia's ACCESS Earth system modelling framework.

The successful candidate will explore equation discovery and other physics-informed machine learning approaches, to develop improved representations of processes in CABLE. The project will aim to strengthen Australia’s national Earth system modelling capabilities.

The project likely includes a research placement within the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (Germany) during the candidature. Applicants should demonstrate relevant experience and explain how their research and technical skills align with the project.

    1. Residency: Domestic applicants only.
    2. Degree program: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
