A novel process for manufacturing ammonium perchlorate (AP), a key component in solid rocket motors for defence and space.
Optimised for domestic production, Australian Strategic Reactive Materials (ASRM) has developed a continuous flow technology for ultra-low CapEx sovereign manufacture of AP. The method improves quality, safety, and manufacturing flexibility in Australia. Solid rocket motors (SRM) are critical for defence applications. Currently, 70% of the mass of SRM propellant is ammonium perchlorate (AP), and the majority of this must be imported, representing a sovereign risk.
-
ASRM’s flow microreactor solution can be housed in an ISO container. A microreactor can be established for 100x less capital expenditure than prevailing designs, and operates on-demand, producing a continuous flow of product. The Commonwealth has invested AUD4.1 billion to create the Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance Enterprise and grow Australia’s guided weapons capability. ASRM can be a key supplier.
-
- ASRM enable ultra-low CapEx sovereign manufacture of this ubiquitous solid rocket motor propellant. Missile-based deterrence through denial heavily leverages Solid Rocket Motors (SRM).
- 70% of the mass of propellant currently used in SRMs is ammonium perchlorate (AP).
- AP supply is extremely vulnerable to disruption during conflict. No AP, no rockets.
