Conjoint Associate Professor Alwin Chuan is a specialist anaesthetist in Liverpool Hospital, Sydney. His main interests in the field of anaesthesia include regional anaesthesia, perioperative ultrasonography, education, and major outcomes after surgery and anaesthesia. His PhD was on novel educational interventions for regional anaesthesia, where he developed assessment tools for evaluation of training, and has received research grants from the NHMRC, College of Anaesthetists, and Australian Society of Anaesthetists. He has lectured both nationally and internationally on ultrasound guided regional anaesthesia techniques and educational themes. He is the inaugural lead of the research subcommittee of the Education SIG within the American Society of Regional Anesthesia.
He is the co-author of the Oxford University Press Regional Anaesthesia Pocket Guide, and has contributed written modules for the University of Melbourne postgraduate ultrasound education courses, New York Society of Regional Anesthesia, chapters in regional anaesthesia textbooks, and peer reviewed publications. He received 2nd place in the Scientific Education and Innovations Exhibits at the American Society of Anesthesiology 2011 for a novel iPhone application on regional anaesthesia.
He has served on the scientific committees of the Australasian Symposium on Ultrasound Guided Regional Anaesthesia, Australian Society of Anaesthetists National Scientific Congress, and is the founding NSW representative to the ASA/ANZCA/NZSA Regional Anaesthesia Special Interest Group since 2008.
He is the supervisor of the provisional fellowship program in perioperative ultrasound at Liverpool Hospital, Sydney, and has mentored and trained fellows in perioperative ultrasound since 2007.
