Elke Mitchell is a Research Fellow within the Public Health Interventions Research Group at the Kirby Institute, UNSW Sydney. She currently works on HIV, TB and adolescent pregnancy studies in Papua New Guinea, as well as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sexual health studies in NSW and Central Australia. Elke has a background in public health and social science with expertise in qualitative, ethnographic and participatory research methods, and the evaluation of public health programs.

Prior to joining the Kirby Institute, Elke worked in academic institutions and research consultancy where her work focused on sexual and reproductive health and other public health issues in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. Elke has a PhD in International Health from the University of Melbourne. Her PhD explored youth sexuality and sexual risk among young women in Fiji.

Elke’s research interests include sexual and reproductive health in the Pacific, youth cultures and sexual geographies, premarital pregnancy and abortion, intimacy and sexual risk, sexual violence, and HIV prevention.
