Dr Jane Carland
BMedSci (HonsI), PhD
Jane Carland is a Senior Hospital Scientist in the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology, St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney. She is also a conjoint Associate Professor, St Vincent’s Clinical School, UNSW Sydney and Chair, St Vincent's Hospital HREC.
Jane has a strong background in pharmacology research, extending from molecular pharmacology of neurotransmission to quality use of medicines. Jane gained her PhD from the University of Sydney under the supervision of Professors Mary Collins (Chebib) and Graham Johnston, her work describing the role of key residues on the function of GABAC receptors. Jane subsequently extended her structure-function studies of neurotransmitter ligand-gated ion channel receptors and transporters, taking up a post-doctoral position at the University of Dundee, UK, before returning to Australia as a UNSW Vice-Chancellors Research Fellow and then working with the Transporter Biology Group in the Discipline of Pharmacology, University of Sydney. She has since moved to work within the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology, St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney.
Jane's research interests include structure-function studies of neurotransmitter receptors and transporters, optimising immunosuppressant therapy in heart and lung transplant, extending use of metformin to complex patient populations (including heart failure and renal failure), influences on prescribing decision-making, evaluating therapeutic drug monitoring processes and exploring informed consent – an ethical tenant that is central to the researcher-participant relationship in clinical research.
Jane is a passionate advocate for research integration within the clinical setting, contributing to research development activities across the St Vincent's precinct, and providing academic supervision and mentorship to Honours, Year 4 Medicine and PhD students. Jane teaches into UNSW pharmacology courses, represents the St Vincent’s Clinical School on the UNSW Year 4 Medicine Committee, is Chair of the St Vincent’s Hospital Human Research Ethics Committee and co-Director of the TDM Service for vancomycin. Her love of research is reflected in her interest in conveying research outcomes to the community, from pre-school science classes and School Outreach programs to volunteering as a research co-ordinator for the Pink Elephants Support Network.
