Dr Kim Snepvangers PFHEA is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Faculty of Arts, Design & Architecture, School of Art & Design.  She was formerly Director: Professional Experience & Engagement Projects at UNSW Sydney: Art & Design.  Kim recently received the 2018 International Society for Education Through Art (InSEA) Award for Excellence in Research in Education through Art (AEREtA). The award was presented to Kim by Glenn Coutts, Professor of Applied Visual Arts, University of Lapland, Chair InSea Executive Board at the European Regional InSEA Congress, 18-21 June 2018, at Aalto University Otaniemi Campus, Helsinki Finland.  As the Art & Design Executive Committee representative, Kim was one of the recipients of the 2017 UNSW Presidents Award – Inaugural People’s Choice Award to the Executive Committee: Women in Research Network. Her award winning  journal article 'Ecologies of practice in tertiary art and design: a review of two cases' co-authored with Associate Professor Arianne Rourke and published by Emerald Insight in 2016 in the journal Higher Education, Skills and Work-Based Learning was selected by the journal’s editorial team as a Highly Commended paper in the 2017 Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence.  As the recipient of a 2016 UNSW Strategic Educational Fellowship Grant (SEF#3) titled: New Approaches to the Development of Professional Identity through Independent Critical Reflection her research interweaves creative and professional leadership contexts.  Using an ecologies of practice research lens to engage with graduate networks and critical pedagogy she has been co-authoring and working with Indigenous educators for the last 5 years. Her previous role as Head, School of Art History & Art Education (2013-2005) managed the strategic direction of art & design education and art hist+ory & theory which gained a maximum 5 star rating in ERA.  Recent leadership roles comprise: Art & Design representative Women in Research Network (WIRN); Convener Arts Education Research Practice Special Interest Group (AERPSIG) in AARE; HDR Supervisor; Visiting Scholar Penn State; Editorial Board Australian Art Education and recipient of two Art & Design Innovation Grants.  As Professional Experience Project (PEP) Coordinator Kim’s appointment encompasses a number of new strategic partnerships with key creative industries, museums, galleries and collectives in designing innovative teaching and learning pathways to meet future and current needs of students.  She has extensive management and research experience in developing transitional educative spaces between academic, creative and professional practice with diverse audiences.

Kim's research interests include creativity, creative ecologies, policy, partnerships and practice.  Her research uses qualitative methods and case studies to expose gaps in orthodox understandings of creative and professional practice. Kim has a concurrent research interest in encountering, Indigenous perspectives, ecologies of practice, participatory economies and the relationships necessary to sustain creative professional partnerships with entrepreneurial industry hosts, partners and business.
