
Dr Alam is a Senior Lecturer in Aviation at the School of Engineering and IT, UNSW Canberra. He holds PhD (Computer Sc) 2008, MTech (Computer Sc) 2000, MA (Economics) 1996, BS (Maths) 1994.
His research interest are mainly in Optimization, Simulation, Modelling and Meta‐Heuristic Search techniques with application to Air Transportation problems.He has over 40 publications in Journals/Conferences with over 380 citations.
He also teaches a variety of subjects in Aviation (Air Traffic Management, Airport Operations) and Computer Sc (Data Structures, Comptational Problem Solving, JAVA programming).
He is an invited reviewer for several high impact journals. Dr. Alam was a organizing co-chair for the 28th Australasian Joint conference on Artificial Intelligence, Canberra, Australia 2016, conference session chair for the 29th IEEE Digital Avionics Systems Conference, Utah, USA, 2010 and for the Ph.D. Symposium, Australian Conference on Artificial Life, Sydney, Australia, 2005 . He also served on the Program Committee for the 22nd Australasian Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence, Brisbane Australia 2009 and for the 1st IEEE Symposium on Artificial Life, Hawaii, USA 2007.

He has represented UNSW at the Safe Skies 2009, International Aviation Safety Conference, Canberra, Australia and at the 7th International Aerospace and Defence Exhibition, Bangalore, India.
He is the co‐editor of the book “Multi‐objective Optimization in Computational Intelligence: Theory and Practice”, which was published by IGI Global, Information Science Reference series in 2008 and author of the book Air Traffic Simulation and Modelling, published by VDM Verlag, Saarbrucken, Germany, 2009.
