Leverage opportunities to connect and collaborate
Taylor McDonald is a fourth-year Mining Engineering student at UNSW, studying a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Mining) and a Bachelor of Commerce. The idea of working with a company an influential as NASA felt like a far-off dream for Taylor, until it wasn’t.
Through UNSW’s unique and awarded ChallEng program which links students with leading companies in the Engineering industry, Taylor took part in a project team called MINEX. He worked on a project collaborating with engineers from different disciplines to design solutions to challenges in the mining industry. Their project was Off-Earth Mining, a vital step in the advancement of space exploration and moon colonisation.
UNSW has ongoing ties with NASA as part of an industry partnership that has seen NASA currently using software developed by UNSW. Thanks to this partnership, Taylor could lean on UNSW’s existing relationship with NASA to gain formidable industry experience that’ll stand out on his resume. Taylor’s team collaborated with some of the best minds in the world during their project, redesigning the Bucket Drum for the NASA RASSOR robot.
