Choosing a university degree is a big decision — especially if you’re planning to study overseas as an international student.

At UNSW Sydney, choosing a course to study in Australia isn’t just about how far your academic achievement will take you. It’s about exploring your unique potential, building life-long, practical skills and shaping your interests into a fulfilling career.

Whether you’re at the start of your undergraduate study journey or looking to take a new direction with a postgraduate degree, this dedicated guide will help you understand university terminology, explore your study options and approach your international application with confidence.

Understanding university terminology

Learning key terms in the Australian education system early makes exploring degrees much easier. Here’s what they mean at UNSW:

  • Degree/Program – Your full qualification (e.g. Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Engineering).

  • Course – An individual subject you study within your degree.

  • Class – A scheduled session on your study timetable consisting of lectures and tutorials.

  • Lecture – A larger teaching session where concepts are introduced.

  • Tutorial – A smaller, interactive class focused on discussion or problem-solving.

  • Pathway – An alternative route into a degree if you don’t meet direct entry requirements. Pathways can include foundation programs, diploma programs or other recognised qualifications that lead into undergraduate study.

How to choose the right degree

Finding the right university degree starts with understanding yourself — not just matching the program to your dream job title. It’s important to consider whether the degree suits your needs alongside your job prospects.

  • Think about:

    • Subjects you enjoy most
    • Projects or activities you’re interested in
    • Topics you research in your own time
    • The kind of problems you’d like to solve in the future

Are you analytical or more creative? A strong communicator? Good with numbers? Your natural strengths can guide your decision and narrow your career path.

It’s okay if you don’t have all the answers right now. Talk it out: Your mentors, friends and family may be able to help you to gather diverse perspectives. You can even hear what our alumnus say about studying as an international student at UNSW.

  • If you have a career in mind, work backwards:

    • What skills are required?

    • Does the program include internships or industry experience?

UNSW Sydney offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across seven leading faculties designed to prepare you for real-world impact.

Demand for expertise shifts depending on global trends and industry needs.

These areas are currently experiencing strong growth:

  • We’re a hands-on, future-focused university. Many degrees include:

    • Industry projects and field trips

    • Research-led teaching

Start by exploring broad interest areas, then narrow down based on majors, course structure and career outcomes. Sometimes the opportunity to specialise within a degree field is what makes it the perfect fit.

You can also explore the related facilities, learning spaces and internship and industry opportunities that will help you thrive.

Throughout your studies, we help you to get ahead with career development and provide support with launching your career in Australia or your home country. Learn more about how UNSW Sydney prepares for you a global career.

  • UNSW holds events across the globe throughout the year. Events like local in-person Open Days and Info Sessions as well as webinars can help you get a feel for what studying at UNSW is really like. It’s a chance to connect with alumni and representatives from your country about program content, student life and what it is like to live and study in Sydney, Australia.

Talking to your teachers, careers advisers or professionals in the field can also help you build confidence to take the first step of your study journey.

  • Your interests are not set in stone and can evolve over time. Many students refine their goals once they start university. You may not feel 100% certain — and that’s okay.

Signs you are on the right path:

    • You feel curious about the subjects

    • You can see yourself developing in that field

    • You’re motivated to learn more

Every step helps you move closer to a degree that suits you.

FAQs

  • Start by identifying your interests, strengths and possible career goals. Research degree structures, majors and graduate outcomes. If you’re unsure, choose a flexible degree that allows you to explore different areas in your first year.

  • At UNSW, a degree (or program) is your full qualification, such as a Bachelor of Science. A course is an individual subject within that degree. View our guide to common university terms.

  • In some cases, students can transfer programs or change majors, depending on academic performance and availability. Always check requirements before applying.

At UNSW, Internal Program Transfer (IPT) is available to current undergraduate students.* IPT lets you move from one program to another within UNSW, without having to reapply through Apply Online. It is a free service for UNSW undergraduate students. Through IPT you may be able to credit some of your completed courses towards your new degree.

*IPT is only available for select programs, with eligibility criteria involved and limited places for the programs. Please see the IPT page for more details.

  • After completing a bachelor’s degree, you can:

    • Begin your professional career

    • Pursue postgraduate study (Master’s or PhD)

    • Work internationally

    • Combine work and further study

An undergraduate degree builds both specialist knowledge and transferable skills — such as communication, teamwork and problem-solving — that employers value globally. This applies to both working in Australia and in your home country.

  • There isn’t one “best” degree. The ideal program depends on your academic background, interests and career plans. Many international students choose fields like business, engineering, computer science and science.
