Veteran Employees at UNSW

At UNSW, we recognise the skills, experience and leadership that veterans and their families bring to our workforce. In line with UNSW’s commitment to societal impact, inclusion and respect, we value the contribution of those who have served and the perspectives they bring to our community.

We recognise the unique capabilities developed through military service – including leadership, teamwork, resilience and a commitment to service—and their strong alignment with UNSW’s values of integrity, respect and contribution to the common good.

Our commitment

UNSW is proud to be a signatory to the Veteran Employment Commitment, demonstrating our commitment to supporting veterans and their families in meaningful and sustainable employment.

Through this commitment, we aim to create an environment where veteran employees can thrive, contribute and continue to develop their careers.

  • UNSW actively recognises and honours military service across the University community.

    This includes:

    • Commemoration of key events such as Remembrance Day and ANZAC Day
    • A military leave policy to support ongoing service commitments
    • Fostering a culture of respect, recognition and inclusion
  • We are committed to supporting veteran staff to successfully balance work, family and any continuing service commitments.

    Support includes:

    • Health and wellbeing services
    • Flexible work arrangements
    • Career development and mentoring opportunities
    • Access to employee networks and community connections
  • We are working towards strengthening pathways into employment at UNSW by:

    • Providing job application advice, tools and resources to support transition into the civilian workforce
    • Developing recruitment approaches that recognise military experience
    • Adapting interview and selection practices to better translate defence skills
    • Supporting career development and retention through tailored opportunities
  • UNSW encourages veteran employees to access additional support available through the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA).
