Loneliness is now recognised as a priority public health problem with a serious impact on physical and mental health, quality of life, and longevity.

Why is this, and what can we do about it?

The textures of loneliness exhibition at the UNSW Health Translation Hub explored feelings and experiences of loneliness in different social settings.

Produced by the Big Anxiety Research Centre, in collaboration with the HTH Exhibition Space, the exhibition drew on research and art from across the faculties of Art, Design & Architecture, Medicine & Health, and Science.

The loneliness and being alone festival run in conjunction with the exhibition at the HTH Seminar room from 13 to 17 April 2026, exploring topics on social connection and creative tools which can be part of the solution. You can read more about the Mandarin speaking AI companions launched as part of the program here.

Special thanks to the Big Anxiety Research Centre staff, students and contributors to the exhibition and festival program.
