There are a number of successful community-engaged initiatives at UNSW that there is much to learn from, including those profiled below. Key enablers of this work area:

  • Long-term collaboration and commitment: relationships, collaboration and sustained commitment are key
  • Genuine reciprocity and working 'at the speed of trust': community priorities first and addressing power imbalances are crucial
  • Aligning institutional strategy and resourcing: universities can leverage their existing multi-skilled teams of academic and professional staff by providing strategies that value community partnerships, funding and senior-level sponsorship, workload allowance and recognition
  • Collaboration between multidisciplinary academic and professional staff: multidisciplinary teams of academic and professional staff and students connected with community partners can address the often complex societal challenges of communities.
