The Graduate Certificate in Mental Health Practice at UNSW offers a flexible way to study advanced mental health skills and how mental health services operate in Australia. One in five Australians aged 16-85 experience a mental disorder each year (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2025), driving strong demand for health practitioners trained in mental health across sectors (National Mental Health Workforce Strategy, 2022-2032). Mental health often shapes how people experience illness and how they respond to treatment and recovery. As a health professional, upskilling in mental health can help you better support patients across a range of clinical settings.

Program structure

The Graduate Certificate in Mental Health Practice is a one-year, fully online program that provides comprehensive training in the discipline of mental health practice. You’ll evaluate evidence-based practice and its application to patient outcomes, conduct comparisons across a wide range of patient groups and learn how to explain various mental health conditions and treatment modalities. 

Full program structure

Students must complete 24 Units of Credit (UOC) of the following mental health courses: 

  • Mental Health Assessment and Treatment – 6 UOC
  • Fundamental Psychological Therapy Skills – 6 UOC
  • Philosophies of Mental Health Care, Services and Systems – 6 UOC
  • Assessing Risk and Managing Challenging Behaviour – 6 UOC
