Industry backing for Wipeout Dementia raises $2.5 million for research

Champions of change, our Wipeout Dementia® Ambassadors inspire action and awareness in the fight against dementia.

Wipeout Dementia® is a corporate surfing fundraiser, hosted by the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing (CHeBA), UNSW to raise funds for dementia research. All funds raised go directly to The Dementia Momentum®, a CHeBA initiative which seeks to bring researchers and the community together to change the future of dementia incidence.

Flick joined Wipeout Dementia in 2025. Flick’s mother, Pauline, was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia at just 46 and passed away in 2021 at the age of 52 - while Flick was competing on Survivor Australia. Since then, Flick has been a passionate advocate for dementia awareness, supporting Dementia Australia as an Ambassador and working alongside the Perron Institute for Neurological and Translational Science.

“I am honoured to be appointed as an Ambassador and am proudly committed to raising awareness as an ongoing tribute to my Mum -  especially younger onset and frontotemporal dementia. This is particularly important to me given few people my age are aware that it can happen to someone in their 40s or 50s.”

1999 ASP World Champion

Surfing legend Mark “Occy” Occhilupo has been an incredible champion of Wipeout Dementia since 2022, using his profile and passion to help raise awareness and drive support for the cause. Occy has brought energy and star power to the events with his surfing prowess and helping to amplify our message through media engagement. In a standout moment of generosity, he auctioned off the very board he rode in the iconic 2019 Bells Beach Heritage Heat against American pro-surfer Tom Curren, raising vital funds for dementia research.

“It’s an honour to be an Ambassador for this worthy cause and in some small way help promote healthy brain ageing in this country.”

2020 Olympic Bronze Medalist

Owen joined Wipeout Dementia as an Ambassador in 2024, determined to do what he could to support research into dementia.

Owen witnessed the start of his father Rob’s decline to dementia not long after suffering a traumatic brain injury from a heavy wipeout while competing for a world title at Pipeline and has been caring for him for over five years.

“Dad’s decline has been a really hard thing to watch, but it’s been an honour to care for my father now I have the time, and I somewhat feel like I understand a little about what he’s experiencing after my own battle with my brain.

1978 World Surfing Champion

Rabbit has been involved in Wipeout Dementia since the inaugural event in 2015 and has surfed in nearly all events.

Rabbit’s unwavering support of Wipeout Dementia has helped to grow and sustain the community of surfers, sponsors and other supporters. He encourages everyone to get on board either as a surfing participant or event sponsor.

“This is a fantastic initiative to drive much needed funds to dementia research. With cardiovascular health in mid-life a key factor in brain health in late life it’s great to see this group taking on a challenging physical endeavour to support CHeBA.”
