When children think about STEM careers, we know that their thoughts are often informed by stereotypes that form at an early age relating to gender, cultural background, race, disability and isolated working styles to name but a few.
Through our Pathfinders, we aim to highlight the true breadth and diversity of STEM, and the multitude of ways that core STEM skills can be useful across a range of careers and everyday situations.
That's why we're excited to introduce our newest Future You Pathfinder, Cliffy McAuliffe, an Antarctic Station Supply Officer with the Australian Antarctic Program.
Before joining the Australian Antarctic Program, Cliffy served in the Royal Australian Air Force, where a deployment to Casey Station first sparked her interest in operations in Antarctica. By asking questions, learning from others and pursuing new opportunities, she built a career that enables science and discovery in one of the most extraordinary workplaces on Earth.
Working at Casey Research Station in Antarctica, Cliffy helps keep one of the most remote scientific communities running smoothly. From managing food and essential supplies to coordinating the movement of equipment and scientific samples, her role sits at the intersection of logistics, teamwork and scientific research.
Her story highlights an important message for students, educators and families: STEM careers extend far beyond the lab, and do not always involve working in isolation.
We know that it matters to represent stories like Cliffy’s. When children encounter a broad range of career stories, they are better able to imagine their own futures and recognise the many ways their interests and strengths can contribute to solving real-world problems.
By introducing Cliffy’s profile and accompanying classroom resources in your classroom or home, you can help to challenge stereotypes about what STEM is while also highlighting the relevance of STEM learning outside of the classroom.
