Our research

Personalise
3D printed brain photography

Tyree IHealthE harnesses the considerable capabilities of UNSW Engineering and UNSW Medicine & Health. Powered by collaboration, Tyree IHealthE is an engine of discovery and research translation.

Translational Research Pillars

Tyree IHealthE is developing research, activities, programs, and education across the following four research pillars:

Electron Microscope Unit
Electron Microscope Unit

Connected Health

Connected Health utilises technologies to support patients outside the clinical setting. Our innovations will promote healthy ageing, improve chronic disease management, and enhance access of care for rural patients.

Image Analytics

The Image Analytics Pillar is an open network focussed on building a community to facilitate and accelerate technology innovation for imaging-based diagnostics and clinical decision making.

Bionics and Bio-robotics

Bionics reflects the integration of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences in the world of translational medicine, supporting health by creating an interface between people and personalised medical device technology.

Translational Biomechanics

Our evidence based methodology promotes the swift translation of discoveries into clinical practice, and health technologies, where they can provide the most benefit.

Our research strategy

Tyree IHealthE brings together researchers, clinicians, technologists, patient stakeholders, and industry to create co-designed innovations that are useful and impactful.

We're guided by the following principles, to always be:

  • Clinically relevant: Innovations are informed by the clinical professionals who understand the patient needs within the healthcare system.

  • Translation focused: Our evidence based methodology promotes the swift translation of discoveries into clinical practice, and health technologies, where they can provide the most benefit.

  • Patient centric: The patient experience is at the centre of Tyree IHealthE's approach.

  • Industry engaged: We leverage our extensive industry partnerships to accelerate innovation and create commercially viable solutions.

Connecting unmet needs with co-designed innovations

CIMIT: A platform for innovation

Moving projects towards implementation requires the use of a structured process. Sydney Consortia for Improving Medicine with Innovation and Technology (SCIMIT) is the platform Tyree IHealthE uses to determine which of the many potential areas of healthcare innovation to pursue, based on verified needs and capabilities. SCIMIT is a collaboration-intensive initiative based on the successful model founded in Boston, USA (CIMIT). It provides a forum for clinicians, technologists, and entrepreneurs to identify and address unmet healthcare needs. The SCIMIT process ensures that all research and development projects carried out by Tyree IHealthE have both clinical and commercial relevance.

A core component of SCIMIT is the Guidance and Tracking System (GAITS), a platform that supports the assessment of commercialisation processes. Tyree IHealthE was granted access to several GAITS licenses by MTP Connect, Australia's growth centre for medical technologies, biotechnologies, and pharmaceuticals sectors. A number of these licenses have been awarded to the winners of the inaugural Catalyst Awards and the teams will have access to a mentor who will guide the project teams through the SCIMIT process.
