As climate change increasingly shapes professional practice across disciplines, universities are rethinking how they prepare graduates for a rapidly changing world. This seminar brings together educational leaders and academics to explore the opportunities and challenges of embedding climate consciousness in higher education. Featuring Professor Nicole Graham (University of Sydney), Professor Stephen Doherty, Associate Professor Helen Gibbon and colleagues, the discussion will share insights, experiences and practical approaches for strengthening climate-conscious education across the University.

We study how firms steer workers’ adaptation behaviors to the negative impact of climate risks. Using unique data from real-time GPS and AI-enhanced driver-monitoring systems tracking 10,000 truck drivers over 15 months, we show that exposure to extreme heat increases dangerous driving behaviors and reduces productivity. Labor contracts play a central role in determining drivers’ adaptation choices.

Effectively mitigating climate-related risks requires urgent and deep decarbonisation in line with the targets set out in the Paris Agreement. Carbon credits are widely seen as a way for businesses and economies to reduce emissions in a cost-effective manner, yet there is growing recognition that the vast majority of carbon credits are failing to deliver their claimed emissions reductions and are instead delaying decarbonisation effort.

Drawing on interviews with politicians, lobbyists and industry figures, as well as media coverage and public statements, Prof Nyberg shows how protesters’ visions of climate action are framed as unrealistic or risky, while industry promotes a “safer” future that largely maintains fossil fuel dominance.
