The Tyree IHealthE Taste of Innovation Program is a six-week, project-based industrial training program that connects UNSW Engineering students with clinicians and healthcare professionals to co-design and deliver real-world MedTech solutions. Hosted within the UNSW Integrated Acute Services Building (IASB), the program provides students with hands-on industrial training while supporting healthcare professionals in advancing their innovative ideas into proof-of-concept prototypes.

For students

The Taste of Innovation Program gives UNSW Engineering students the chance to:

  • work in multidisciplinary teams on co-designed MedTech projects

  • collaborate closely with clinicians and technical engineers

  • engage in workshops, team-building activities, and presentations

  • receive structured feedback from industry and healthcare partners.

The program counts for 30 days of traditional industrial training (with the possibility to extend to 60 days) and runs from 5 January – 13 February 2026. Students will be onsite full-time, Monday to Friday 9 am–5 pm.

Successful applicants receive a $3,000 award ($1,500 upon acceptance, $1,500 upon completion).

Student reflections

It’s hard to believe that my six-week industrial training at IHealthE has come to an end. When I first walked in, I was excited but also unsure of what to expect. What I found was an environment that welcomed me with open arms, challenged me in the best ways, and left me with memories I’ll always cherish.

Working on the Compliance Monitoring System for Scoliosis Bracing was an incredible experience. From sensor integration to data processing and hands-on prototyping, every step came with its own challenges and little “aha!” moments. But what made it truly special was the people—an amazing group of interns from different engineering backgrounds, each bringing unique perspectives and fresh ideas. Our discussions weren’t just about projects; they were about career dreams, personal growth, and plenty of inside jokes that made even the toughest days fun.

The highlight? Getting to work inside a hospital, seeing firsthand how engineering meets healthcare. It was one of those moments that reaffirmed why I chose biomedical engineering in the first place.

None of this would have been possible without the guidance of my incredible supervisors and the unwavering support of the IHealthE team.

As this chapter closes, I walk away with more than just technical skills—I leave with friendships, valuable lessons, and a deeper passion for what I do. This is just the beginning!
