Exam rules
Learn the rules & guidelines for sitting exams at UNSW Bengaluru
It is your responsibility to be familiar with the rules governing the conduct of exams on campus and online. UNSW can impose heavy penalties if you breach exam rules.

🪪 Don't forget to bring your physical student ID card!
You must display your UNSW student identification card at the door of your exam venue to be scanned, and then on your desk for the duration of the exam.
If your name has changed or your card has expired or is lost or damaged, book an appointment with the Bengaluru Student Hub immediately for a replacement ID card.
⚠️ No student ID card, no exam!
You will not be permitted to sit your final exams without your UNSW student ID card.
Know the rules for each stage of your in-person exam
1. Arriving and leaving the exam venue
You must:
✅ Be seated in the correct room 15 minutes before the exam start time
✅ Leave your belongings outside, including your bag, pencil case, books, notes, electronic diary, food1, medication or any other materials not specified as required for your exam (except for your valuables2)
You must not:
🚫 Enter the exam room any later than 30 minutes after the exam commences
🚫 Re-enter the exam room after leaving it unless you were under approved supervision the entire time you were outside of your exam venue
🚫 Take an answer booklet or examination paper from the exam room, unless instructed otherwise.
🚫 Wear hats, helmets, earpieces or any other headwear in the exam room. The exception to this is a religious head covering3 and/or hearing aids. If you require hearing aids, please contact the UNSW Bengaluru Examinations team: exams.Bengaluru@unsw.edu.au
🚫 Bring any AI device into the exam room.
2. Before the exam starts
You must:
❗ Follow all instructions given by exam supervisors
❗ Switch off all mobile telephones and/or any other communication equipment, including smart watches and music players. Place these under your desk as they may be checked during your exam
❗ Put away your wrist and/or handheld watch faced down under your desk
❗ Place your valuables under your desk before the exam commences. Laptops and tablets are permitted under your desk, but they must be switched off
❗ Complete your name slip - fill in all fields, including the date, and sign it
❗ Not leave the exam room until at least 30 minutes after the exam commences. If you need to leave for any reason, please inform your exam supervisor.
3. During the exam
You must:
✅ Answer all questions in English unless stated otherwise
✅ Be considerate of others if you finish early and wish to leave the exam room Keep noise to a minimum and leave quietly. Your exam supervisor may instruct you to wait back if the exam is ending soon.
Please note that you may be photographed by a UNSW staff member during your exam.
You must not:
🚫 Write during reading time or after the exam finishes
🚫 Seek to gain an unfair advantage in any way during the exam
🚫 Leave during the last 10 minutes of the exam. You may also be required to stay beyond the exam end time
🚫 Endeavour to obtain assistance in your work or give assistance to any other candidate, or commit any other breach of conduct.
1 If you have a medical condition that requires you to eat during an exam, you need to register with Equitable Learning Services prior to your exam.
2 UNSW cannot guarantee the safekeeping of valuables either inside or outside the exam room. If you are concerned about the security of your valuable possessions, please make alternative arrangements for their care.
3 If you have any questions about what head coverings are permitted, please contact the UNSW Examinations Team via exams.bengaluru@unsw.edu.au to seek clarification before your exam.
⚠️ What to do if you feel unwell during your exam
If you feel unwell to the point that you cannot continue with your exam, you should take the following steps:
- Stop working on your exam immediately and raise your hand
- Advise the supervisor or invigilator that you are not feeling well
- Leave the exam venue
- Obtain an official medical certificate dated within 24 hours of the examination date
- Submit a Special Consideration application within 3 working days of the exam date stating that you felt ill during the exam and were unable to continue.
Please note: If you're feeling unwell before sitting your exam, be aware of the Fit to Sit rule at UNSW.
When completing an online exam, you are declaring that all of your answers are entirely your own work unless acknowledged or otherwise permitted.
Should any form of academic misconduct be detected, breaching the Student Code, the University may take disciplinary action under the Student Misconduct Procedure.
